Since the whole Janet Jackson nipple thing a few years back the NFL has gone the safe route with their halftime choices. The Who, Paul McCartney, Springsteen, Tom Petty, and the most controversial of the recent acts Prince. Seems to me that they may be running out of non-threatening acts from that generation and they'll never hire MTV to produce it again. I'd be cool with most choices so long as they avoid the half hour abortions that were the "Blues Brothers" (John Goodman Edition) and Elvis Presto. So who should they use, who will they use, and will they pull it off?

p.s. I was surprised to discover that Gloria Estefan has been involved in 3 times.

The halftime will always suck. Even if you personally don't think that a particular show sucks, 90% of the rest of the people watching do. So it will be until the end of time.

You say that jokingly, but I don't doubt for a second that both could end happening.

they should use the opportunity to bring back bands who have broken up so that they could do a one night reunion concert.

At the moment I can't think of any legitimate bands that mattered. Maybe Led Zepplin, Van Halen?

Love VH, but I'd rather they didn't do it. The impending criticism would hurt my feelings.

VH would be interesting, but an abortion all the same. As it is, Eddie's kid is the bass player, Dave can't sing anymore, and you will never get the VH bros and Sammy and Mike in the same room together.

I've seen this edition, it's called Guitar Hero: Van Halen

I've heard Abba was offered $1 Billion to unite and do a huge world tour, and they turned it down. There is no way they would do the Super Bowl, and my ears thank them.

When the announcement was released that they are being inducted into the R&R hall of fame (not sure why, but whatever), I read something on MSNBC that they won't all be in NY for the ceremony because one is agorophobic and another one is afraid to fly. Once again, this is a good thing.

Green Day has a long enough history and enough recognizable songs that they could pull it off. I could live with that.

I would be less happy, but the masses would probably like it better if a different band was selected:

Coldplay.

Neither do I. Except I think Manilow's retired.

Oh, and the Bee-Gees.

Now, bringing in Dire Straights/Knopfler would be fun by my definition.

Is is safe to suggest that if you are playing the Super Bowl, then you've already peaked....like 10-20 years ago?

I tend to think so, Doug, and that classic rockers have dominated recent Super Bowl Halftime Shows are proof positive of that. I bet there's a pretty nice payday involved as well to get the likes of The Rolling Stones, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band and The Who to rock halftime and not expose their bare asses on live TV.

This sounds like it could be a sentence, not a list of bands.

I saw them at ISU in 1993. My first experience of Rage and I was blown away by their aggressive behavior and unique sound. When they were done, and cypress took the stage, I was like, meh. And I went to the concert to hear Cypress.

Eventually all of the fans of the classic rockers will expire and the fan base will shift to the bare ass, vulgaraity spewing, cross dressing musicians of today's era. Then what?
